Hudson Valley Sports Dome
Milton, NY | Indoor Sports Dome
The Hudson Valley Sports Dome is an air-supported indoor sports dome located in Milton, NY. Nearly any sport played on a turf field is played in the dome, which is among the largest in the Northeast, including soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, softball and flag football. It has also hosted everything from home and garden shows to dog shows, wrestling tournaments, graduations and corporate events.
Operators wanted more light and more natural light, and had been looking for alternatives to their legacy metal halide lighting for a long time. Given the size of the dome, it was very difficult to get adequate lighting to ensure the safety of athletes while playing. Energy and maintenance costs were high, and the operators were looking for “green” upgrades they could make throughout the facility.
The project included replacing all of the metal halide lights in the dome. With the dramatically reduced fixture count, just two Ephesus fixtures were mounted on each crossarm, replacing six metal halides installed previously.
32 Ephesus Stadium 1000 LED fixtures were installed around the dome’s perimeter, replacing 96 1000W metal halide fixtures. This installation is unique in that the Stadium fixtures were installed to cast light upward onto the reflective surface and ceiling of the dome to direct the light back down
to the playing surface. This was the first use of the Ephesus Stadium series fixtures in this mounting configuration, and the first known use of LED lighting in an indoor sports dome.
Estimated energy consumption was reduced by 75% and an average of 45 foot candles was generated on the playing surface, far exceeding the original lighting’s measurements of 15 foot candles. The indoor lighting more closely replicates natural daylight, an important attribute in a facility with no windows. The Ephesus fixtures eliminated shadows and dark spots on the playing surface for an improved experience for both players and spectators.
